Char Siu Chicken

Char Siu Chicken is a flavorful Chinese-style roasted chicken marinated in a sweet and savory red barbecue sauce, perfect for a delicious dinner with an authentic taste.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp red food coloring (optional, for traditional color)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, five-spice powder, oyster sauce, Shaoxing wine, minced garlic, sesame oil, and red food coloring (if using) to make the marinade.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, making sure they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a rack on top.
  4. Arrange the marinated chicken thighs on the rack, reserving the marinade.
  5. Bake the chicken for 20 minutes, basting with reserved marinade halfway through.
  6. Turn the broiler on and broil the chicken for 3-5 minutes until charred and caramelized. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, serve Char Siu Chicken with steamed jasmine rice and sautéed bok choy or garnish with sliced scallions and sesame seeds.
