Shepherds Pie is a classic comfort dish featuring savory ground meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked to golden perfection.

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and garlic; cook until softened.
  3. Add ground lamb to the skillet and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in diced carrots, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and broth; simmer for about 10 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  5. Mix in frozen peas and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a baking dish and spread evenly.
  7. Top with a generous layer of mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface with a fork.
  8. Dot the mashed potatoes with butter.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle grated cheddar cheese on top before baking or add fresh herbs like thyme to the meat mixture.
