Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken

Japanese Yakitori Grilled Chicken features tender, marinated chicken skewers grilled to perfection with a savory and sweet tare sauce, perfect for an authentic Japanese appetizer or main dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g boneless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 green onions, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • Skewers (soaked in water for 30 minutes)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp grated ginger (optional)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, and grated ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside.
  2. Thread the chicken pieces and green onions alternately onto the soaked skewers.
  3. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Grill the skewers for 4-5 minutes on one side. Brush generously with the tare sauce.
  5. Flip and grill for another 4-5 minutes, basting again with the sauce, until chicken is cooked through and slightly caramelized.
  6. Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, let the chicken marinate in the tare sauce for 30 minutes before grilling. Serve with steamed rice and pickled vegetables for a complete meal.
