  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • Optional: chocolate chips or candy eyes for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  6. Stir in the red food coloring until the dough is uniformly red.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  8. Use a bear-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Decorate with chocolate chips or candy eyes if desired.
  10. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until the edges are set but cookies remain soft.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a cream cheese frosting on top once the cookies have cooled, or sprinkle with powdered sugar for a simple finish.
